Read, listen to, and understand your documents.

PageVoice is an open-source reading and accessibility app for PDFs and EPUBs. Import a file, read it comfortably, listen to it with a voice that runs in your browser, and search it — no account needed.

Works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Narration in English and Spanish.

The PageVoice reader with “The Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde open: a contents list on the left, the chapter text in the middle with the current sentence highlighted, and the audio player on the right.

What PageVoice does

Reading

A calm reader built for long sessions.

  • Paper, light and night themes; adjustable text size and line width
  • Contents list, section navigation and bookmarks
  • Find in book, with accents ignored and every match highlighted
  • Focus mode that hides everything except the text
  • Remembers where you stopped, per document

Listening

Neural voices that run on your device after a one-time download.

  • Kokoro for English and Piper for Spain Spanish
  • The sentence being spoken is highlighted and kept in view
  • Playback speed from 0.5× to 2×, sleep timer and media keys
  • Listen from any sentence; audio is prepared ahead as you go
  • Export prepared chapters as MP3 files, or as an M4B audiobook (best effort)

Understanding

Tools that point you back to the text rather than replace it.

  • Keyword search across the whole book, with section citations
  • Detected chapters and front matter you can review and correct
  • Optional meaning-based search and character-name detection, run locally
  • No generated summaries or invented answers — every result is a passage

Accessibility is the point

PageVoice exists so that documents can be read in whichever way works for you: by eye, by ear, or both at once.

  • Every control works from the keyboard, with visible focus
  • Shortcuts for play, find, sentence navigation and focus mode
  • Labelled controls and live status messages for screen readers
  • Text up to 32 px, three themes and respect for reduced motion
  • Spoken text is marked by shape and icon, not by colour alone

Local processing, stated plainly

Where documents are processed
Parsing, OCR, speech and search run in Web Workers inside your browser. PageVoice has no accounts and no server that receives your files.
Where they are stored
In this browser’s storage on this device. Clearing site data removes them; library backups are a ZIP file you keep.
What uses the network
Loading the app, and downloading voices or optional models from Hugging Face and jsDelivr when you choose to. Those downloads contain no document text, and the app blocks connections to any other server. No analytics.
One exception
If you pick your device’s built-in speech instead of a downloaded voice, your operating system reads the text, and some systems use online services to do it.
